Ham Rong Mountain is a dragon head-shaped mountain located right next to the town center, and also a splendid eco-tourism area of Sapa. This is one of the few beautiful and shape figure mountains in Vietnam with its own fascinating and thrilling legends.
Located right behind the Sapa stone church, in Hoang Lien Son mountain range, Ham Rong mountain is becoming the most attractive eco-tourism area in Sapa Vietnam. Viewing the mountain from afar, you will see random cliffs line up like a dragon holding its head up towards the blue sky, and we have the name Ham Rong (Dragon head) because of that.

Meanwhile many people explain this dragon head legend with a much more interesting and romantic legend. Legend has it that, in the past, this place was a shelter of a dragon couple loving each other passionately, they always stuck together. Shortly thereafter, when they were lovingly playing, they were unawarely struck by the great flood and all things were drowned under the giant water. The male dragon struggled vigorously and was lucky to escape while the female dragon was exhausted, so she was engulfed in the water, only raising her head to see her partner fly to heaven. Over time, the dragon turned petrified with her body became the majestic Hoang Lien Son range and her head was the Ham Rong mountain.
Ham Rong Mountain today has been built into an attractive eco-tourism area of Sapa, consisting of three main areas which are Ham Rong flower garden, Thach Lam stone area and last but not least, the summit of Ham Rong where tourists can take a panoramic view of Sapa from above.
Ham Rong flower garden is a stop in the journey to the top of Ham Rong. The flower garden is designed in accordance to the natural terrain of the mountain, to reach here tourists will have to go through a long way with hundreds of stone steps. Scene by scene, the view spreads out before the tourists like a brilliant miniature plateau with a variety of seasonal flowers offering tourists fresh and disparate emotions.
Thach Lam stone area, a unique garden with no end of strange cliffs arranged unintentionally by Mother nature, has made the ancestors imagine the countless claws and feathers of the “female dragon.” In the middle of the standing stone area, tourists will have a mysterious and scary feeling like being lost in a maze with no exit.

After a 1-kilometer journey of crossing a difficult, rocky path, tourists will finally set foot on the top of Ham Rong, also known as the Cloudy Yard (San May), which is decorated like an observation hut. Here, tourists can witness the entire town of Sapa with beautiful clouds drifting. This is considered as the most wonderful view of Sapa because at this height, tourists can feel the interference of heaven and earth and walk slowly into the clouds. At the high of more than 1800m, tourists can breathe in fresh and cool air and be overwhelmed with the most panoramic view of Sapa.
Should someone have a chance to go to Sapa, it would be regretful if he could not set foot on Ham Rong mountain. Standing at the edge, hearing the mountain legends once again, you will find yourself lost in the world of love, grace and fidelity. Ham Rong Mountain is like the most wonderful picture of nature, trees, wild wind and clouds, making all of us linger forever..
