This 5-day adventure aims to show you the most beautiful route in north Vietnam: a journey from Yen Bai to Sapa. It covers the least-visited, but most stunning destinations of the region including Tu Le, Mu Cang Chai, Sapa. You will also meet ethnic minority people in their colorful costumes

Mu Cang Chai Rice Fields

Mu Cang Chai:  has a special topography with steep hills and deep valleys where the local residences such as Hmong, Thai, Dao have created the master-piece, Terraced Fields. They has cultivated about 500 hectares of rice terraces for centuries in La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh communes. In 2007, the fields was recognized as national heritage sites for its amazing landscape. The fields look stunning during the rice season. The best times are the planting season (June) and the harvesting season (The end of September to the beginning of October). During harvesting season, ready crop is turning to yellow, while new crop is dotted with white of water and young green of seedling rice. The scenery is a big attraction to photographers and trekkers.

Mu Cang Chai Rice Terraced Fields - The Terrible Tour Guide Travel

Sapa:  is an overwhelming vista that reminds you of the greatness of nature. The vivid green mountains climb high into the dramatic skies before cascading down the other side, the balconies of rice paddies forming hypnotizing patterns all the way down to the valleys. However, the peace and serenity that you feel when drinking in the fresh mountain air has only been reestablished in recent years.

Khau Pha Pass

Khau Pha Pass: is the most rugged and longest pass which stretch more than 30km. Khau Pha Pass does not look as dangerous as other high mountain passes in the Far North, but the view from the pass is just stunning. The most beautiful moments are found when the rice terraces are flooded for the coming rice crop and when the rice ripens.

Khau Pha Pass - Tu Le

Duong Lam Ancient Village

Duong Lam is a purely agricultural village of the Northern Red River Delta. It has retained many of its traditional features including ancient houses, some of which are 300-400 years old.

Duong Lam ancient village - The Terrible Tour Guide Travel

Day 1: Hanoi – Duong Lam Ancient Village – Nghia Lo (L, D)

You will leave Hanoi from the Old Quarter and travel for about 2 hours to Duong Lam, an ancient village which has been under UNESCO protection since 2006. The houses date back 100-400 years and are surrounded by temples and gardens. This is an important historical site which is home to temples in honour of two kings, national heroes, who defended the land against the Chinese about 1200 years ago. After looking around the village, you will also stop for lunch.

You will continue to drive through the rural countryside, through flat paddy fields and then, as you gain height, you see tea plantations corn or maize dotted amongst the karst limestone outcrops. You will stay overnight with a delightful White Thai family in a traditional stilt house in Nghia Lo.

Day 2: Nghia Lo – Mu Cang Chai (B, L, D)

You will rise early and take a bike ride around the paddy fields, basking in the peaceful morning ambience. The mornings begin early for the villagers who can be seen quietly working in the fields surrounded by ducks, chickens, pigs and buffalos.

Breakfast is taken in the open air overlooking the fields before you check out and set off over the dramatic Khau Pha Mountain Pass. The rice fields of Tu Le along the way are spectacular and will fill you with wonder.

After lunch in a local restaurant, you will continue to drive to Nam Co Village where you will see the flower H’mong ethnic minority in their colourful traditional costume. If your trip falls on the correct day, you will also be able to visit the fascinating local market.

You will then drive to La Pan Tan and Mam Soi terraced rice fields and take a short walk up the hill to a viewpoint to take in the incredible views. You will have dinner and stay overnight at Mrs Chon’s Homestay in Kim Noi Village, a Thai family run business.

Day 3: Trekking in Mu Cang Chai (B, L, D)

After breakfast in the homestay, a local guide will collect you for the longest trek of the tour, from Kim Noi Village to Hang Dang De then to Che Cu Nha. You will enjoy a picnic lunch on the rice terraces and then continue to La Pan Tan where you will be picked up and driven back for a second night at Mrs Chon’s homestay.

Day 4: Mu Cang Chai - Sapa (B, L, D)

After breakfast, you will drive from Mu Cang Chai through Tan Uyen and then on to Sapa.

The road is very dramatic with many winding hairpin bends each opening up a new vista of the mountains. You will cross the Sin Ho Pass before arriving in Sapa where you will have lunch at the chance to explore the town.

Then you will trek to Giang Ta Chai Village, where you will have dinner and stay overnight in a Dao ethnic house.

Day 5: Sapa - Hanoi(B, L)

We return to Hanoi, still travelling through magnificent scenery, mountainous at first but descending to the areas of tea plantations and then gradually flattening out to rice paddies. You may see the bamboo irrigation systems used in the fields. You will stop for lunch on the way and should arrive back in Hanoi in the early afternoon. Then you will have a few hours to enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life or relax and reflect on your amazing adventure.

My hubby and I booked this private tour through the mountains in the North of Vietnam. We went to Nghia Lo, Mu Cang Chai and Sa Pa. Everything was organised perfectly and the tour guide (Joey) was an excellent guide. We stayed in several homestays and hotels. Especially the small size family run homestays were a great experience. No luxury but lot of hospitality, good food and unforgettable impressions.

I travel to Hanoi for work fairly frequently and each time, try to get out and explore what Vietnam has to offer. I’m a photographer on the side and after some research, discovered Mu Cang Chai as having some of the best rice terraced fields in the area. I wanted a private tour, with just myself and a co-worker for a 3 day, 2 night tour. After reaching out to several tour companies on-line, I chose The Terrible Tour Guide Travel because of the responsiveness from Tung, who quickly replied to all my emails, and was willing to tailor the trip to what I wanted to see. The tour exceeded my expectations and I came away with some fantastic photos, and a new appreciation of all the hard work that the rural farmers put in to produce their rice harvest.
