This 3- day adventure will take you through the karst-studded waters of Lan Ha Bay to the stunning Cat Ba Island. As well as taking in some of the most incredible areas in the north of Vietnam, this action-packed trip is full of unforgettable experiences including cruising on a traditional wooden sailboat, hiking through a beautiful national park, staying with local families, discovering caves system and kayaking. This tour takes you away from the crowded tourist areas so you really enjoy the beauty of this stunning bay.

Cat Ba National Park

Cat Ba National Park:  extends across 263 square kilometres of hilly forested terrain. The area is dense with vegetation which provides a fantastic habitat for the plethora of species inhabiting the island. Amongst those animals are 32 species of mammals, 78 species of birds and 20 species of lizards and reptiles. White-headed langurs are one of the mammal species found on the island and are one of the rarest primate species in the world. Trekking through the park is a popular activity, and it is easy to see why. The clean air, rich forest and stunning views are bound to fill you with vitality. Independent hiking is possible, but it is a good idea to have a guide, not just for safety, but also for their expert knowledge of the fauna and flora. The national park caters to all abilities from a gentle afternoon walk to the more vigorous trek up to the summit of Cat Ba’s highest peak.

Lan Ha Bay - Halong Bay

Lan Ha Bay: Due to it being a fair way from Halong City, not so many tourist boats venture here, meaning Lan Ha Bay has a more isolated appeal. Sailing and kayak trips here are best organised in Cat Ba Town. Geologically, Lan Ha is an extension of Halong Bay but sits in a different province of Vietnam. It has hundreds of species of fish, molluscs and arthropod, and numerous hard and soft coral live in the waters here. You may also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some of the larger animals in the bay such as seals and dolphins.

Cannon Fort

Cannon Fort: is another site which offers a peek into Cat Ba’s past. Built by the Japanese in World War Two but also used throughout the Indochina and Vietnam Wars, this defence system is located 177 meters above sea level. This strategic position made it easy to spot advancing enemies and stop them in their tracks using the canons. Today, however, this means that it affords visitors some of the most incredible views. Sunset is particularly beautiful; each night, views of the thick jungle, silhouetted boats and karst peaks glow in the rich light of the sun before it dips down below the horizon.

Viet Hai fishing village

Viet Hai fishing village: is a small village in the midst of jungles, covered by high mountains range of the Cat Ba National Park. Few years ago, Viet Hai was absolutely separated with the outside world. The local residents lived their self supply life as the primitive human of thousand years ago. Because of this cultural practice, foreign visitors to this village increase gradually. In recent years, together with the recognition of Cat Ba Archipelago as the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, thousands tourists have trekked through the mountains, jungles, springs to visit this unique attraction.

We had a personalized 4-day, 3-night trip to Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay, Van Long Natural Area and Cuc Phuong National Park. We are a party of 4, all in our early 60s, looking to explore the natural environment of this part of the world. Our trip was fun and memorable. Two of the three nights we stayed in guest houses in national parks, which we loved. Although the weather was unseasonably chilly, we still went all of the places we wanted to go, and saw fantastic natural beauty. The TTG arranged for a great park ranger for our visit to Cuc Phuong, who knew all of the birds and quadrupled the bird list we’d been keeping in Vietnam. We highly recommend TTGT.

I cannot recommend The Terrible Tour Guide more highly. Of all the decisions I’ve made towards this trip, deciding to work with this company, was like a gift from the universe. Everywhere we went, whether it was on a small boat with a fisherman, who cooked us food he’d just caught, and played the guitar as we rocked on Cat Ba bay, or if it was staying in the most picturesque bungalow hotel nestled into the mountains, or if it was doing a hardcore, truly badas* jungle trek–I knew we were traveling with the best of the best. Joey was constantly checking in to provide extra tips on where to find the best food, or best sunsets. Even after our trip was over, we stayed in touch, always knowing that any question we had while in Vietnam, Joey would be ready to help us out with the best kept secrets. Vietnam was a treasure, and it was largely because of our experience with The Terrible Tour Guide. If you’re looking for an experience that is far from gimmicky, a trip that will put you in touch with the heartbeat of a country, this is the tour group to pick. Thank you so much!
