Dong Van Karst Plateau, also known as Dong Van Highland, is a stone plateau spread over four districts, including Quang Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac of Ha Giang province. Dong Van Karst Plateau has an area of 2356.80 km2, located 150 km from Ha Giang town, having the average height from 1.000 to 1.600 m above sea level.
Dong Van Plateau has many limestone mountain areas close to the Tropic of Cancer, with relatively large slopes. Therefore, the valleys, streams and rivers here are severely divided. The plateau is a rocky mountain region of different ages, from the Devonian period to Permian period, which is surrounded by soil mountains. Since it was formed a long time ago, in the Dong Van Karst Plateau, many fossils of species of 400-600 million years ago are found.
With its rugged and divided terrain, the climate of the Dong Van plateau is temperate, divided into rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season starts in May and ends in October. The dry season lasts from November to April next year. On the rocky plateau, winter temperature sometimes drops to -50C and the annual average temperature is around 24-280C.
Dong Van Karst Plateau is a place owning many outstanding geological heritage. Travelling here, tourists can visit many national-level scenic monuments such as Ma Pi Leng Pass, Dong Van Old Quarter, Quan Ba Double Mountain, mansion of Vuong family…
From Ha Giang town, follow the 4C highway, the 43km section, tourists will come to Quan Ba district; cross the Can Ty abrupt pass road, the vast pine forests, winding slopes, tourists in turn arrive in Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac districts to explore Dong Van Karst plateau.

The profile of Dong Van Karst plateau was submitted to UNESCO and recognized as a global geopark in April 2010. On October 3, 2010, the profile of Dong Van Karst plateau geopark was officially recognized as a Global Geopark by the Advisory Council of the Global Geoparks Network of UNESCO. With this title, Dong Van Karst plateau is the only global geopark in Vietnam and the second global geopark in Southeast Asia.
With a full range of data on environmental resources, mineral geology, especially on cultural identity of ethnic groups living on the Dong Van Karst plateau ( H’mong, Lo Lo, Pu cross, Dao…), it can be seen that this is a major specific characteristics of Dong Van Karst plateau geopark that is appreciated in the world. With the title of Global Geopark, Dong Van Karst plateau has brought a lot of great value to this land.
